Non-Sparking, Non-Magnetic, Corrosion Resistant Hand Tools
USFA/FEMA (U.S. Fire Administration / Federal Emergency Management Agency) "Hazardous Materials Response Technology Assessment" states, "Ordinary hand tools are usually made of steel, which can cause sparks if struck, scraped, or dropped which can be disastrous in an explosive atmosphere. Tools used in a hazardous materials incident MUST be constructed of non-sparking, non-ferrous, non-magnetic corrosion resistant metals."
OSHA (Occupational Safety & Health Administration) document "Hand and Power Tools" states, "Iron or steel hand tools may produce sparks that can be an ignition source around flammable substances. Where this hazard exists, spark-resistant tools should be used..."

In general, Non-Sparking Tools should be used in any environment where ignition sources are a concern. Applications include, but not limited to:

Caution: These tools are not classified as anti-static because they DO conduct electricity. Do Not use high copper content tools in direct contact with acetylene due to the possible formation of explosive acetylide, especially in the presence of moisture.
Non-sparking, Non-magnetic Hand Tools are manufactured from special Aluminum-Bronze (AlBr) or Copper-Beryllium (CuBe2) alloys for safe use in Ex zones where hazardous, flammable or combustible vapors, liquids, dusts or residues may be present. They comply with ATEX Directives for Ex Zones 0, 1 and 2 (Flammable Gas, Mists or Vapors); Zones 20, 21 and 22 (Combustible Dusts); and M1 and M2 for mining.
Appropriate applications include oil drilling platforms, petrochemical plants,
oil refineries, natural gas installations, ammunition plants, varnish factories, sugar refineries, grain silos, mining and other industries where non-sparking safety tools are required. The non-magnetic feature of these alloys also makes them ideal for working on special machinery with powerful magnets such as MRI machines, military de-mining and explosives.
These corrosion-resistant tools are suitable for use in shipyards, laboratories, and paper and pulp mills, as well as in the pharmaceutical, food product manufacturing and wine industries. Non-sparking Safety Tools are recommended for use where hazardous, flammable or combustible vapors, liquids, dusts or residues are present and should be used by all industrial safety programs.
Corrosion-resistant Safety Tools are the ideal choice when working in marine and offshore environments. Corrosion and rust can be extremely dangerous in hazardous environments. Impacts involving rust can initiate a thermal reaction which can cause an ignition in an explosive atmosphere. Recommended for use in hazardous environments where flammable or combustible vapors, liquids, dusts or residues are present. |
